4.3 Diversity, Cultural Understanding & Global Awareness
Candidates model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding, and increase global awareness.
Artifact: Mini Moodle Course, Artifact 10
Reflection:
Part of the Mini Moodle Course that I designed, developed, and implemented for ITEC 7480, ITEC 7481, and ITEC 7482 was creating activities related to diversity, cultural understanding, and global awareness. I touched on this in a couple of ways; through daily listening assignments, the ringtone assignment, and the podcast assignment. We explored different cultures through these assignments and students were free to include their own cultural influences in the projects.
Mastery of this standard is evident through the various activities within the blended learning course. There were opportunities for students to explore their own cultural influences and through sharing and peer evaluation, global awareness was also achieved. I believe modeling came from the selections I chose for the daily listening assignments because I picked music representing different cultures and in class we discussed cultural representations in the music.
I learned from this experience that even though traditionally western music is studied in music classes, it is essential to include music from other cultures. This helps the diverse student identify more with the music being studied and increases global awareness for students not familiar with a style of music. Culture adds uniqueness to a style of music and to not explore culture when learning about music limits the scope of study. To improve this component, I would include more listening sources to cover more cultures.
The study of different cultures through music enhanced the blended learning environment. Students felt comfortable talking about the music of cultures they associate with. Students were also able to better identify music of other cultures through discussion.
