3.2 Managing Digital Tools & Resources
Candidates effectively manage digital tools and resources within the context of student learning experiences.
Artifact: Interactive White Boards
Reflection:
The Interactive White Boards assignment was for the ITEC 7400 21st Teaching and Learning course. For this assignment we were to explore using Interactive White Boards (IWB’s) in our classrooms, including creating activities for student use. This assignment included a summary, including elements of managing the technology.
Learning to use and manage software in the classroom creates an effective learning environment. While using these tools to teach, it is fundamentally more important to manage these tools in a way students are engaged with them as well, not just the teacher. This assignment is a glimpse into how this can be done.
This assignment allowed me to understand the process of learning a tool and using it my classroom. More importantly, it showed me that tools are more effective in the learning environment if students are able to interact and be part of that environment. The biggest thing I learned from this assignment is the fact that technology does not replace effective teaching, it serves to enhance it. One thing I would change to improve the quality of this artifact would be to get more into detail about how other teachers use this tool effectively in their classrooms.
Learning about interactive white boards impacted my school in a slightly different way than might be expected. I observe other teachers using these IWB’s in different ways, many of them without student engagement. The knowledge I gained from this assignment was that for my own classroom I do not have a desire to have one. I can do a lot more with an iPad projected on my screen and allowing students to interact without leaving their seats. I gained this knowledge through research tied to this assignment.
